Phthalate Watch

Posted by Robin

What the heck are phthalates, you ask? Phthalates are a common plasticizer; a family of chemical compounds that make plastic soft and flexible. They used in everything from nail polish to paint pigments to sex toys made of “jelly rubber.” In fact a lot of cheaper sex toys contain phthalates.

So what’s the big deal? Phthalates carry health risks; just how much is not clear and they are safely used for lots of things we come in contact with every day. But we don’t stick most of those things in our pussies or up our butts and therein lies the rub. Those tissues absord chemicals much readily than elsewhere in our bodoies and things that are perfectly okay to handle or even suck on are not so good to insert. So we are not a big fan of jelly-rubber toys here. (We like silicone, even though it costs more. You can boil silicone toys and they last forever.) If you do use jelly-rubber toys, putting a condom on them solves the problem. You should be doing that anyway, because otherwisr they are just too hard to keep clean

Interestingly, there is a move afoot in the EU to ban use of phthalates in sex toys. They are already banned in infant toys and dog toys over there. The move is being pushed by Green Peace and it wil be interesting to see how it procedes. (Go here for an update.) I doubt we’ll see any call for similar legislation here in the US anytime soon, but then I’m not sure I really want Congress trying to take responsibility for what I use to get myself off. Much better if we, the buying public, educate ourselves on the matter and vote with our credit cards!

Any of course it helps to buy sex toys from reputable sources that provide clear and detailed info on their products: we like BabeLand especially. Good Vibes and Blowfish are also good.

So to help get you up to speed on things that come hum in the night [or aftrenoon or even morning], here is an excellent run-down on the materials used in sex toys and on their general care & feeding. A great resource to review before you buy!
